How we are getting on during June (Clubs Together)

Birmingham Irish • June 19, 2020

During the month of June, we have been able to tune into the specific needs of our community even more clearly and adapt our services even further to provide unique and essential care across the city.

Over the last few weeks, our 'Clubs Together' food bank campaign with Warwickshire GAA has gained extraordinary momentum and allowed us to distribute an increasing amount of donations to those in desperate need.

We are now delivering hot meals across the city and with delivery lists growing to over 50 people a day and food bank enquiries reaching higher amounts, the soaring donations from the initiative have enabled us to increase the number of delivery and opening days from two to three weekly. This helps us greatly in our aim to provide crucial care to everyone in our community who needs it, and on a regular basis.
In order to keep providing our support, and understand the specific needs of individual members of the community, our dedicated Covid-19 helpline, 0121 604 6111, remains open to the general public (7 days per week, 9am until 8pm). The help we have given so far on this line has ranged greatly, from ordering hot meal deliveries to even delivering a radio to someone who felt particularly lonely due to self-isolating on their own.
The lockdown has taken its toll on mental health for all, however for our specialised clients, it has been especially tough. Over the last month, the continuation of our wellbeing calls and the entertainment tablet library service we operate (sharing a variety of film, TV literature and gaming content) has continued in order to keep them as comfortable as we possibly can during quarantine.

In order to provide both physical and mental aid for the Birmingham Irish community as a whole during the pandemic, we have been utilising our social media channels as much as possible. This has been particularly effective for spreading the message for our food bank, hot meal deliveries and helpline across the city to everyone that may need our help now and in the coming weeks. Our social media is also providing links to our fellow Birmingham mental health services, plus entertainment and cultural content to the community who are struggling with their mental well-being over the lockdown period.

Our newest project is the 'Birmingham Irish Musical Lockdown' where each Monday, a live track from a brilliant Birmingham music artist is featured and shared with the community via our YouTube channel and social media platforms, (read more about this particular project here).

As an organisation, we are so incredibly proud of our wonderful Birmingham community and everything we have achieved by pulling together, sharing love and providing hope, both in the month of June and since the pandemic began. These extremely challenging circumstances will pass and we send our love to you all, knowing that we will come together and celebrate the end of pandemic in true Irish spirit.
