Cúpla Focal

Dia Dhaoibh a chairde

Following holidays and accommodation, inevitably we need to talk about the weather!

An aimsir – the weather

Conas atá an aimsir inniu? What’s the weather like today?

Well, anseo in Willenhall tá sé fliuch báite – soaking wet.

Wet weather is sometimes described as aimsir salach – dirty weather!

Some useful phrases:

Bhí an aimsir go dona – The weather was bad

Bhí an aimsir go maith – The weather is good

ag cur baistí – raining

ag cur sneachta – snowing

ceomhar – foggy

Tá sé fuar inniu – it’s cold today

Bhí sé gaofar inné – it was windy yesterday

Bhí sé grianmhar sa Spáinn – It was sunny in Spain

Níl sé scamallach anois – it’s not cloudy now

stoirmiúil – stormy

te – hot

róthe – too hot

an-te – very hot

geal - bright

Nuair a bhíonn sé grianmhar téim amach ag siúl – When it’s sunny I go out walking

Nuair a bhíonn sé fuar fanaim sa bhaile – When it’s cold I stay at home

Nuair a bhíonn sé ag cur sneachta téim ag sciáil – When it’s snowing I go skiing

Useful hint: Listen to the weather forecast (Réamhaisneis na haimsire) as Gaeilge on TG4 or Raidió na Gaeltachta and see how many words you recognise.

Try to translate the following now!

  1. Nuair a bhíonn sé grianmhar (When it’s sunny)
  2. Nuair a bhíonn sé ceomhar
  3. Nuair a bhíonn sé geal
  4. Bhí sé ag cur sneachta
  5. Tá sé fuar inniu
