Cúpla Focal: A couple of Irish Gaelic words

Birmingham Irish • January 22, 2023

At Birmingham Irish, we feel that the beautiful language of Gaelic is an extraordinary gift that should be passed down from generation to generation with immense pride. This very reason is behind our language column, Cúpla Focal, meaning, a couple of Irish Gaelic words.

  • Áthbhliain faoi mhaise – A prosperous New Year to you all.
  • Fáilte ar ais – welcome back.
  • Tá súil agam go raibh Nollaig shona ag gach éinne. I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.
  • Bliain nua agus dea-rúin – New Year Resolutions.

Maybe you’ve decided to develop your Irish Language skills this year – I hope so. All it takes is a few words (cúpla focal!) on a regular basis. Maybe you could build on the vocabulary (stór focal) we learnt last year?

A useful website for Irish is Duolingo – great for developing your vocabulary and it’s free – easy and fun to use – bain triail as. (give it a try).

Anois píosa beag faoin geimhreadh – Now a little about winter:

  • Tá sé fuar inniu – It is cold today
  • Tá sé ag cur sneachta – It is snowing
  • Is lá seaca é – it is a frosty day
  • Tá sé scamallach – It is cloudy
  • Níl sé gaofar – It is not windy
  • Níl an ghrian ag taitneamh – The sun is not shining

Let’s try a few comparative forms:

  • Fuar – níos fuaire – is fuaire (cold - colder – coldest)
  • Dorcha – níos dorcha – is dorcha (dark – darker – darkest)
  • Te – níos teo – is teo (warm – warmer – warmest)
  • Geal – níos gile – is gile (bright – brighter - brightest)

Éist le réamhaisneis na haimsire – listen to the weather forecast on TG4 and see how many words you recognise.

Feicfidh mé sibh go luath (see you soon).

Ádh mór! (Good luck).
