Birmingham Irish Association St Brigid’s Day celebrations
In the lead up to St Brigid’s Day on 1st February our organisation celebrated in many ways within our projects.
Each of our five wonderful dementia centres, across the city had an event in which everyone made their very own St Brigid’s crosses, using pipe cleaners and they were fantastic.
The centres also completed colouring and crosswords, all relating to the feast day. Finishing the events with hot chocolates, cakes and lots of group discussions to mark the day.
The Tuesday club had a fantastic St Brigid’s Day Afternoon Tea event which 80 – 100 individuals got together to celebrate. The morning started with one of our lovely volunteers, Margaret who told everyone the story of St Brigid. We then had afternoon tea all together, enjoying lots of scones and tea.
The group had discussions remembering all of their unsung heroes and mammies. To finish the event we also used the big screen to display a 4 minute clip that was published by the Irish Foreign Ministry in 2022 to celebrate St Brigid’s Day. Everyone had a really great day.
We also set up a social media campaign, to celebrate our unsung heroes and mammies of our local community. We received nominations from Staff, Board members and Volunteers to recognise how many amazing people there are all around us.
The engagement on our social media has been phenomenal and we thank all of you for this. We have loved reading the positive, uplifting comments.

Saint Brigid’s Blessing
May Brigid bless the house wherein we dwell
Bless every fireside, every wall and door
Bless every heart that beats beneath its roof
Bless every hand that toils to bring its joy
Bless every foot that walks portals through
May Brigid bless the house that shelters us
