Birmingham Irish • September 23, 2024

We have some new additions to our team of staff and volunteers at Birmingham Irish Association - without these amazing people it would be impossible for us to provide our daily services.

Staff - Claire White

Claire White

(Children’s Emotional Support Worker)

Fun fact – Whilst I can’t sing, I have nailed the air guitar! 😊

"I’m a mum of two teenagers and I’ve recently completed a degree in Psychology and Mental Health. Now my children are older I’m able to pursue a career which interests me rather than just having a job which fits around the family.  When I saw the role advertised with BIA I instantly felt excited as the job fulfilled my desire to support young people using the knowledge I’d gathered whilst studying. As soon as I met the interview panel I felt at ease and knew I could fit in, and so far, so good!  The team are fantastic.

"Whilst my Irish heritage is not directly linked to my generation, my grandparents were from Glasgow and I believe their grandparents came over from Wexford.  There’s a real warmth from all of the Irish community I’ve met so far and I’ve been made to feel very welcome.

"My role involves supporting children at both St Alban’s and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary Schools in Kings Heath.  Due to the school summer holidays I’ve only met a handful of pupils so far, but I have lots of exciting plans for activities, including making use of the Forest School and any outdoor space.  Connection with nature is fantastic for emotional regulation!  I’ll be spending two days a week at each of the schools and will focus on building the children’s resilience, self-esteem and social skills.  I can see it being challenging at times but also highly rewarding, and I can’t wait for the new term to get started."

(Dementia Support Worker at Maryvale centre)

Fun fact – IIhave the ability to name that tune in one, I also know the words to most songs. Although singing isn’t my best attribute. 😊

"I come from Irish background as my mom was born in Strabane and came to live in Birmingham as a young girl. I had heard so much about Birmingham Irish Association as an amazing company and when the opportunity arose did not hesitate in becoming part of a great team.

“I am enjoying this new opportunity and am really looking forward to learning more and more about the wonderful service users we have. Everyone who I have had the pleasure of working with and alongside have been so friendly and helpful. I feel blessed to be part of this wonderful community."
