In February, Emma De Souza spoke with us to share her story, as current immigration rules in the UK did not allow her American husband to remain living in their family home in Belfast.
Since then, we are delighted to announce that the UK Government has recently changed the immigration rules to recognise the right, under the Good Friday Agreement, to be classed as Irish, British or Both.
This incredible step in history means that Emma’s husband is now able to stay in Belfast and countless other families will not face calls to renounce British citizenship or face years in court as Emma and her husband have.
Here at Birmingham Irish, we have no doubt that united pressure from strong voices across the globe, including Congress in America, has helped to secure this important change. We would like to say that we are absolutely delighted for you Emma, a huge congratulations to you and all who were involved in the campaign. A truly massive achievement.
