Following the success of our Dementia Awareness workshops over the past four years, we are now directing our support towards those children who have a loved one with Dementia through small support groups in local Primary Schools. The sessions give children the opportunity to share their experience of Dementia and talk to others experiencing a similar situation. It also enables them to share their feelings and concerns about their Nanny or Grandad and Dementia and talk about ways we can connect with our loved ones.
During the sessions we also read some story books and play memory games and activities, this helps the children to understand more about Dementia in a simple and child friendly way. The sessions develop children’s knowledge and understanding of Dementia and also provides them with valuable life skills to enable them to be able to help and support people in their family or community living with Dementia.
We feel it is extremely important to educate young children about Dementia as there are currently 850,000 people living with Dementia in the UK and this is expected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040. Nearly one third of young people know someone with Dementia, so now is the time to work together to educate our younger generations and help to raise awareness and understanding.
It is extremely rewarding to work with schools that recognise how important it is to raise awareness of Dementia and educate younger children.
If you know of any schools that would like to get involved or if you would like some more information about our Dementia Awareness Project, please email our Children’s Support worker, Paulene -
