(Teaghlach is the family – the people in your household)
Muintir is used if you are talking about your wider family.
- Tá triúr i mo theaglach – There are three in my family/household
- Is as Gaillimh mo mhuintir – My people are from Galway
- athair – father aintín - aunt
- máthair – mother nia - nephew
- tuismitheoir – parent neacht - niece
- mac – son seanathair - grandfather
- iníon – daughter seanmháthair - grandmother
- deartháir – brother garmhac - grandson
- deirfiur – sister gariníon - granddaughter
- uncail – uncle leasathair – stepfather
- leasmháthair – stepmother bean chéile – wife
- fear céile – husband
And here are a few useful phrases you can use to talk about your family:
- Is páiste aonair mé – I’m an only child
- Tá mé uchtaithe – I’m adopted
- Tá beirt pháistí againn – We have two children
- An bhfuil clann agat? - Do you have children?
- Tá beirt mhac agam – I have two sons
- (You can use clann or paistí for children)
- pósta – married scartha – separated
- colscartha – divorced singil – single
- baintreach – widow/widower geallta – engaged
Remember if you want to hear or use a few words of Irish come along to Norton’s in Digbeth on Sunday 13 October from I-3pm. The Irish session is followed by a traditional Irish music session beginning at 3pm, (and every second Sunday of the month).
