Dia daoibh a chairde! Conas atá sibh?
This month I thought I might share with you a few useful everyday phrases that you might struggle to find in a dictionary!
HOW DO YOU SAY…?
You might say:
Tabhair aire do do ghnóthaí féin (Take care of your own business)
or:
Coinnigh do ladar amach! (Literally: Keep your ladle out of it!)
or:
Ní bhaineann sé leat (It’s got nothing to do with you)
Gread leat!
Fan amach uaim!
Tá mé togha (pronounced thow)
or:
Níl rud ar bith ag cur isteach orm (Nothing is bothering me)
Ná leag lámh air!
Ní féidir é a bheith i do phota agus i do mhála agat.
(Literally: You can’t have it in the pot and in your bag)
And here are a couple of books, written in English, which will doubtless inspire you to work at your Irish:
Coming Home by Michael McCaughan
Michael writes beautifully about his own journey with the language, while sharing with us every learning technique you are ever going to need! A must read for anyone with an interest in Irish.
Anseo by Úna-Minh Kavanagh
Úna-Minh was born in Vietnam and brought up by an Irish speaker in Kerry. She talks about her love of the language and also about the challenges she encountered, including racism, while growing up in Ireland.
Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh go leir!
Feicfidh mé sibh ag an mórsiúil, 17ú Márta, le cunadh Dé! (See you at the parade!)
Terri
