Celtic School Cultural Project (April update)

Birmingham Irish • April 29, 2021

As you may already know from the March edition of our newsletter, we were able to begin our Irish Cultural Sessions last month at The Abbey Catholic Primary School in Erdington with session leader and talented folk musician, Jobe Baker Sullivan of local band 'Ire-ish'.

Even a month on, it's safe to say that we at the Association are still absolutely delighted and so grateful that it could still go ahead, as it gave an exciting new project and a creative release to their two Year 3 classes on their first day back at school after the lockdown.

Since our last update in March, the classes have enjoyed eight vibrant sessions in total, including two focused on percussion and led by Jobe's fantastic bandmate, Joe Cook. As a result of the sessions the children have so far learned the basics of notes and sheet music, and to play simple tunes together on the bodhran, tin whistle and ukelele. Soon they will be learning their Irish performance piece to play together in June, which we are so very excited to hear!

As an organisation, we want to extend massive thanks to The Abbey Catholic School in Erdington, for making these sessions a possibility, and also to both Jobe Baker Sullivan and Joe Cook for working with us and sharing their wonderful knowledge with the next generation. This project truly couldn't be possible without you all, and we are so grateful for your hard work.

All primary school years are welcome to take part. To register your interest, please email jennifer@birish.org.uk
