Andy Street: Natural Environment Awards recognise groups the West Midlands

Birmingham Irish • November 26, 2022

People from outside the West Midlands often have an incorrect expectation of what our region is like – they expect it to be all concrete and motorways.

Then, when they visit us, they are surprised to see just how green the West Midlands is, with so many cherished open spaces from major parks and nature reserves to community-led projects that support green lungs in the centre of our communities.

Well, I want to tell you about a new awards scheme dedicated to recognising the excellence of those who protect, restore, and enhance the region’s natural environment.

Organised by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), the Natural Environment Awards will recognise organisations who care for local green spaces – and they are open for nominations now!

Community groups, businesses, local authorities, and educational institutions are all eligible to be nominated for their work throughout the year. Judges will be looking for real commitment and determination for preserving and creating green spaces in the West Midlands.

It is hoped that the awards will also inspire new projects and increase awareness about the importance of preserving the natural environment.

Nominations are open until January 2023, and it will be my honour to announce the winners at an awards ceremony in March.

The idea is to celebrate the fantastic efforts of organisations from across our region to celebrate and protect the wonderful waterways and green spaces we are blessed with here in the West Midlands.

These organisations, which are so often driven by volunteers, make a real difference to the quality of life we all enjoy and will be essential as we strive to meet our climate change goals.

Through these awards, the efforts of passionate community groups, businesses, local authorities and educational institutions will receive the recognition they rightly deserve. So, please do apply if you’ve been involved with a project that meets the criteria as your story will help to inspire others.

Only organisations within the seven constituent authorities of the WMCA are eligible to enter. To apply and find out more information, please visit www.wmca.org.uk
