When the news of John Hume’s passing reached us, as an organisation, we were, and still are, so very saddened.
An inspirational leader who pioneered for a peaceful end to violence of the Troubles, Mr Hume was truly one of kind and we were so very lucky to live amongst such a person in our lifetime. Due to his being there for Ireland and creating a light of hope in the most difficult of times, he is now known far and wide as the architect of the 1998 Belfast Agreement.
Ireland's current SDLP leader, Colum Eastwood, described him as Ireland's "most significant and consequential political party leader" of the 20th century. It is understood that Mr Hume's death was not related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
We would like to express our deepest condolences to Mr Hume's family, and we hope they can find comfort in the legacy he has left behind.
